In one of his letters Wagner gave a detailed account of his nearly fatal journey to London, how he was almost shipwrecked. The captain navigated his boat from storms and high seas into a Norwegian fjord. This experience inspired The Flying Dutchman. The protagonist in this romantic opera is a man fighting with superior powers, condemned to homelessness and perdition who finally loses the battle with destiny.
