The premiére of Rigoletto in the Venetian Teatro Fenice was greatly hindered by demands of the censorship. It was only due to Verdi’s personal connections that the authorities were finally satisfied with the altering of the scene and character names. Success was beyond belief.
Although the plot of the opera is bloody and cruel, the surging abundance of melodies, the wonderful beauty is enriched by supreme expressive power. The performance in Budapest is an unforgettable experience for every opera lover.
