Turandot is Puccini’s last masterpiece and was unfinished till his death. The premiere of Turandot was at La Scala, Milan, on April 25, 1926. In the middle of the Act, right after Liu’s suicide, Toscanini stopped the orchestra, turned to the audience and announced: “Here the opera ends, because at this point the maestro died”. The curtain was lowered and the performance ended. The opera was completed upon the sketches left by Puccini and is still on as of Luciano Berio’s version of the ending.
The music is full of emotion and of dramatic scenery, spectacular, and the fantastic instrumention allows Turandot to be a real popular opera all over the world.
