The world premiere performance of La Bohème was in Turin in 1896 and was conducted by the then 29 years old Arturo Toscanini. The premiere did not go well, however Puccini’s opera became more and more popular and nowadays it is one of the most performed operas worldwide. The story is set in Paris and is about poor artists. Puccini’s music is based upon the best Italian tradition, with a colourful instrumentation. The present Budapest performance is to be seen since its 1937 premiere, in the same, unchanged appearance, in the legendary staging of Kálmán Nádasdy and in the original scenery.
